Hong Kong Chapter: Believers vs Non-Believers Alternative Workplace Strategies (AWS)

By: Karen Chan

For the final workplace forum of 2011, we decided to hold an interactive debate session between Believers and Non-Believers of Alternative Workplace Strategies (AWS), in conjunction with a Christmas party at the Hong Kong Football Club.

Our Believers were John Bowden, Cisco’s APJ and India Manager for Workplace Design and Development and Andrew Watt, Barclays’ Regional Head of Corporate Real Estate Services, Asia Pacific.

Our Non-Believers were Mark Bernard, Knight Frank’s Executive Director and Head of Commercial Agency Department, Hong Kong and Gerard McCrea, First Commercial Properties’ Founder and Managing Director.

The speakers began by stating why they did or didn’t support AWS and gave relevant case study examples to back up their point of view. A lively and sometimes heated debate ensued, with some interesting questions posed by our moderator, Sophia Mendelsohn of Haworth and also from our audience. While the debate did not have a clear winner, it gave everyone some interesting opinions to ponder. The evening was wrapped up with more drinks to celebrate the holiday season and another successful year.

Tenants Get Ever More Efficient with Space Needs

GlobeSt.com (01/27/12) Morphy, Erika

The average tenant decreases the amount of square footage it occupies by 10 percent every time it moves, mainly because the new digs offer a much more efficient use of space. So, if the average tenant moves once every 10 years, this could ultimately mean trouble for the nation's building owners even in such traditionally strong commercial property markets as Washington, D.C. To make up the shortfall caused by efficiency, Studley executive vice president David Lipson calculates that a submarket needs 10 percent growth to offset the overall 10 percent... More
